A head bob decided the $400,000 Sunland Derby as Getaway Car edged Caldera for the win. Getaway Car, the 6-5 favorite, zipped out of the gate in front and set opening fractions of 23.31, 46.93 and 1:10.99 under Juan Hernandez while Caldera bided his time. In the far turn Caldera and Rafael Bejarano stormed up to challenge, then overtake Getaway Car. During the ensuing stretch battle Getaway Car came back on Caldera and the pair hit the wire almost inseparable. The winning time was 1:42.64. Touchy, bet down with late money to 2-1, overtook tiring fourth finisher Take Charge Tom in the stretch to get the show but never challenged the top two. The winner is trained by Bob Baffert for SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Dianne Bashor, Determined Stables, Robert E. Masterson, Tom J. Ryan, Waves Edge Capital and Catherine Donovan. Bred in KY by Blue Heaven Farm and Curlin Syndicate. Getaway Car is by Curlin out of Surrender Now, by Morning Line.
