A Small Bonus Section

Final 5/16 Times in 8.5 Furlong Races Since Feb. 4

Feb. 4

Rocket Can: Won the Holy Bull with a wide trip after being two lengths behind the first half-mile; was only 1/2 length off the pace with 5/16 left and finished in 31.11. Track rated fast. He got an 82 Beyer.

Feb. 4

The Robert B. Lewis is not analyzed. Only four ran. The winner, Newgate, is off the Derby Trail. Second and third finishers Hard to Figure and Worcester are still in trainer Baffert's hands and thus ineligible for Kentucky Derby points.

Feb. 11

Litigate: Won the Sam F. Davis Stakes after finishing in a slow 33.36 on a fast track. He is off the Derby Trail with a soft tissue injury. Second finisher Groveland finished eighth in the Tampa Bay Derby. Third finisher Classic Car Wash, who finished in 33.26, was second to Tapit Trice in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Feb. 18

Instant Coffee: In the Rebel Stakes he earned a 94 Beyer after finishing in 32.41 on a track rated sloppy/sealed. The closing Red Route One got the final 5/16 in 31.56 going from last of 11 to second. Yes, he was last with 5/16 mile to go and was almost 20 lengths behind at the first call.

March 4

Congruent: Finished the Battaglia Memorial on synthetic in 30.81. He lagged nine lengths behind the pace after a half-mile and was 4 1/2 lengths back with 5/16 mile left. Track fast at Turfway as always. Congruent's Beyer Speed Rating was 91.

March 4

Forte: In the Fountain of Youth, he was never more than 2 1/2 lengths off the pace and finished in 30.88 seconds after rallying from two lengths back in the final 5/16. Second finisher Rocket Can, second by 4 1/2 lengths, came home in 32.14. Third finisher Cyclone Mischief led after six furlongs and finished in 32.43. Track rated fast. Forte earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure.

March 4

Practical Move: The winner of the San Felipe took an inside route into the stretch after waiting on the far turn to win after hitting the gate at the break. He got home in 30.63, besting second finisher Geaux Rocket Ride by 2 1/2 lengths when that one finished in 31.33 after being ahead of the winner at the 5/16 pole. Third finisher Skinner got the final 5/16 in 30.98 after a slow start. Track fast. Beyer Speed Figure: 100. Runner-up Geaux Rocket Ride 96, third place Skinner 94.

March 11
Tapit Trice: Worst to first in the Tampa Bay Derby,
he blew by eight horses to finish in 31.23. Second finisher Classic Car Wash finished in 32.13. Third finisher Classic Legacy timed in 31.98. Track fast. Tapit Trice was given a 92 Beyer. Rocket Can got his second straight 82 Beyer.

April 15

Disarm finished the final 5/16 mile of the Lexington Stakes in 31.61, all the while losing ground to winner First Mission, who finished in an excellent 31.06, especially considering the short stretch run. After six furlongs, Disarm was two lengths behind First Mission. At the finish Disarm was beaten 4 3/4 lengths by First Mission. In fact, every horse in the race lost ground to First Mission in the final 5/16 mile.

Nine Furlong Races +

Every year we examine fractions in the 9 and 9.5 furlong Kentucky Derby prep races, with emphasis on (1) whether horses finished the final 3/8 mile in 38 seconds or less; and (2) whether horses ran 12-second furlongs, or what we call "12s," at three of the five calls or better. See Section 7 for more information about "12's". Horses with these abilities do well in the Kentucky Derby. It's better if a horse can run "12's" AND finish in 38 seconds or less in the same race.

April 8, 1 1/8 Mile Blue Grass Stakes, Keeneland, track fast

When Tapit Trice separated from his lead pony in the post parade and began a slow gallop, he seemingly floated over the ground with grace and ease you rarely see. He is a superior athlete befitting the $1.3 million price he brought at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2021. If you haven't been there, the Keeneland sales pavilion is a baseball throw to the track, where Tapit Trice ran the most important race of his career to date.

A winning move was made early by Luis Saez. After Tapit Trice broke a bit slowly, Saez moved him off the rail to the clear outside while traveling into in the first turn. From there it was just a question of whether Tapit Trice was fast enough to run down several horses while going wide. The primary object of his attention turned out to be second betting choice Verifying.

Verifying was a stubborn beat, losing by only a neck to a horse that earned a solid Beyer figure. I haven't seen confirmation of it, but I'd think Verifying earned the same figure.

Another 5 3/4 lengths back in third was Blazing Sevens. He probably ran a sneaky-good race considering he was four or five wide on both turns. It was his second start of the year, and he stands to improve in his third one if he gets a better trip.

The tote board quaked a bit shortly before the gate opened. My recall is that Tapit Trice went from even money to 8-5 while Verifying dropped from 3-1 to 2-1. There was strong late backing for Verifying, but the betting public nailed the cold trifecta. Blazing Sevens was the third choice at 6-1.

I don't keep track of things like this, but I think it's rare for the first five finishers of one final prep race to emerge all qualifying for the Kentucky Derby. But that's what happened in the Blue Grass.

The gallop-out showed Verifying out front, soon to be joined by Tapit Trice, and then Blazing Sevens appeared with them in the middle of the first turn as his rider was beginning to pull him up.

Tapit Trice earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure in the Blue Grass.

Tapit Trice

He earned 12s at the first three calls, which qualifies, and finished in under 38 seconds despite a five wide/three wide trip. The chart call: "Tapit Trice was hustled out of the gates, shifted out to the four path while off of the pace around the first turn, gained five wide and outside of foes entering the backstretch, to achieve stalking position by the five furlong pole, pressed outside of the top pair around the far turn, ranged up to a leading Verifying while getting floated to the five path entering the lane, bid coming to midstretch, brushed with that one at the furlong grounds, then took a bump while forging an advantage in the closing stages."

Verifying

He earned 12s at the first three calls, which qualifies, and finished in under 38 seconds while having a good trip. The chart call: "Verifying stalked two wide, bid entering the far turn, led turning for home, shifted out to the four path entering the lane to float an on-charging Tapit Trice wider, gamely resisted that foe's bid in upper stretch, brushed with him at the furlong grounds, then subtly came out under left handed urging in the final sixteenth, and bumped his counterpart while being bested."

Blazing Sevens

He did not earn 12s and did not finish in under 38 seconds, but he was brave in the stretch to hold third. This is an astute chart writer. The chart call: "Blazing Sevens laid off of the pace in the four to five paths, tracked in hand outside of foes down the backstretch, inched closer four wide around the far turn, floated to the six path entering the lane, but failed to keep pace with the embattled leading pair in upper stretch, yet held show from inner rivals through the final furlong."

April 8, 1 1/8 Mile Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita, track fast

The Santa Anita Derby looks strong from a raw time standpoint, and the Beyer guys liked it too. From first to third each horse produced a winning effort.

One knock could be that those three received a perfect setup from two long odds horses setting the pace one-two (54-1 One in Vermillion and 40-1 Low Expectations) for over a half-mile. The absence of Geaux Rocket Ride after spiking a fever left the field without a front-runner with the potential to carry his speed deep into the stretch.

Skinner was visually impressive as he stormed around horses leaving the far turn, and it was Skinner who ran the last three furlongs fastest of all. Mandarin Hero (JPN) cut the corner to get a bit of an advantage on Skinner, and he showed he wasn't afraid of a fight in the stretch.

Despite the momentum of the second and third finishers, Practical Move led the field through the gallop-out, initially followed most closely by Mandarin Hero and Skinner, but National Treasure joined Practical Move as they approached the center of the turn.

Practical Move

He ran 12s the final three calls but not the first two when he aveaged faster than 12 seconds per furlong. Despite his quick early running he finished in under 38 seconds. I will be interested in DRF's track variant to see if it is a low number (indicating a track playing fast). The chart call: "Practical Move broke a step slow then steered to the inside to give chase, pulled the rider along at the three-quarter pole, inched closer from inside in the middle stages, applied pressure from the rail into the far turn, took over under confident handling at the five-sixteenths pole, roused two wide into the lane and moved clear, met the challenge from Mandarin Hero in the final sixteenth, drifted out a bit late and gamely prevailed."

Practical Move earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure in the Santa Anita Derby.

Mandarin Hero

He gets credit for 12s at the last four calls, and he finished strongly, almost less than 37 seconds. The chart call: "Mandarin Hero bumped with inner rival at the start, settled in the two path, took closer order up the backstretch, coaxed into the far turn, angled to the rail around the bend, cut the corner into the stretch, tipped out and bumped with Skinner in the lane, then rallied between foes in deep stretch and just missed."

Skinner

Curiously, Skinner is the only horse in the top four of the Santa Anita Derby to run perfect 12s, but he didn't win. Further, the loss came after running a sub-37 second final 3/8 mile. Assuming the track was playing fast, he did very well to close from seventh to be beaten by only a half-length. The chart call: "Skinner got bumped on both sides leaving the gate, reserved three wide early, went three deep into the far turn, range up four wide outside the leaders leaving the bend, bumped with the runner-up in the lane, fought three deep into the final sixteenth and finished a game third."

National Treasure

He did not run 12s but did finish in under 38 seconds. He looks unlikely to make the Kentucky Derby. This was the only race he could earn points. The chart call: "National Treasure bumped at the start, tracked three wide early, raced outside rivals up the backstretch, continued in the three path on the far turn, lacked room behind One in Vermillion at the quarter pole, moved out in the lane and kept on to earn a minor award."

April 8, 1 1/8 Mile Wood Memorial, Aqueduct, track fast

Given its illustrious past, I don't take any joy in the demise of the Wood Memorial as an important cog in the Kentucky Derby wheel of fortune. Without doing a year-by-year analysis, my recollection and impression is the Wood lost its importance when Frank Stronach moved the Florida Derby up to five weeks before the Kentucky Derby. With that move, instead of being a prep for the Wood Memorial the Florida Derby became a significant Kentucky Derby prep in and of itself. Suddenly, the top players weren't in New York three or four weeks before the first Saturday in May.

One winner on the day was Tampa Bay Downs, whose Derby produced two of the three prep winners on April 8. Tapit Trice you could see coming, but Lord Miles?

You can never say never in life, law or horse racing, but it's hard to see Lord Miles or Hit Show excelling in the Kentucky Derby. Dreamlike and Arctic Arrogance look unlikely to make the field.

Lord Miles and Hit Show galloped out in tandem well ahead of the others.

Lord Miles earned a 93 Beyer Speed Figure in the Wood Memorial.

Lord Miles

He did not run 12s but he finished in under 38 seconds. They were crawling up front, and late runners had no chance to close. The chart call: "Lord Miles bumped with a rival at the start, established a forward position early, went three wide around the first turn, raced up close on the outside, was asked in the four path on the far turn, gained under a drive into upper stretch, made a bid outside of three foes inside the three-sixteenths, jostled with the runner-up outside the sixteenth-pole, rubbed saddles while battling with two foes to the wire and gamely prevailed at big odds."

He did not run 12s but he finished in under 38 seconds. The chart call: "Hit Show moved in some early, went four wide around the opening bend, settled just off the pace, was given his cue in the three path while inside of the winner on the far turn, was guided out for room under a left-handed crop in upper stretch, made a bid between foes inside the three-sixteenths, jostled with the winner outside the sixteenth-pole, continued to fight between foes while rubbing saddles to the wire and was denied while just able to get the place."

The chart call: "Dreamlike was hustled from the gate then taken in hand nearing the first turn, traveled around that bend in the two path, was well placed just off the pace, moved out late on the backstretch, issued a challenge under urging in the four then three path on the final turn, turned into upper stretch under a drive, fought on gamely inside of two opponents in the final furlong, rubbed saddles some with the runner-up and just missed while well clear for the show."

He did not run 12s or finish in under 38 seconds. He lost several lengths in the final eighth-mile. The chart call: "Arctic Arrogance was hustled from the gate, angled in while going to the front, saved ground on the first turn, set a joint pace on the inside of a foe, vied in the two path under pressure on the far turn, battled under a drive into the final furlong and weakened."

April 1, 1 1/8 Mile Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park, track fast

The original official time of 1:48.51 was changed to 1:49.37.* We are told the finish line timer was tripped early, which seems impossible. The final time is probably trustworthy after reputable sources said they verified separately within 3/100 second four times. It's always something, isn't it? I am still concerned the time at one mile into the race is off too, considering how slowly the field is shown moving through the fourth quarter-mile.

This win wasn't nearly as effortless as Forte's Breeders' Cup or Fountain of Youth, so it gives reason to think he's not as invincible as we thought Saturday morning before he was sent off at 3-10 odds in the Florida Derby.

On the other hand, Forte won from post 11, something only two of the last 40+ starters at Gulfstream Park have managed to do according to trainer Pletcher.

Barbaro faced similar concerns before his impressive win from post 10 in the 2006 Florida Derby, and that, I am almost certain, came before the starting and finish locations were reconfigured a bit to accommodate nine-furlong races more fairly. Barbaro's feat from way outside was especially rare in those days. Barbaro's running style was considerably different from Forte'sm in that rendition of the Florida Derby, though, as he was never worse than second in an 11-horse field (Sharp Humor set the pace), and Forte came from many lengths off the pace.

The worst mistake I ever made on this Subscription Page was failing to pick Barbaro to win the 2006 Kentucky Derby. I relied on someone's impression of his final workout, and it was a mistake. Since then, I've learned to rely on my own impressions of workouts. At the time, I was also concerned that Barbaro only had two prior starts at age three when almost all winners of the Derby had been racing three or four times at age three before the Derby. Little did I know Barbaro was part of an emerging trend of horses with two prior starts at age three being successful in the Kentucky Derby.

Only three of the 12 Florida Derby jockeys were riding on retained mounts: Edgard Zayas on Mr. Ripple (fourth at 47-1), Irad Ortiz, Jr. on Forte (first), and Jose Ortiz on Dubyuhnell (eleventh).

Javier Castellano either took off Mage or was taken off Mage in favor of Luis Saez. Castellano finished one placing back of Mage on Cyclone Mischief. Meanwhile, and I'm not aware of the reason, Tyler Gaffalione took off Cyclone Mischief and left town completely to ride Red Route One in the Arkansas Derby only to finish a desultory sixth.

Forte was awarded a 95 Beyer Speed Rating (it was 98 before the time was revised), lower than the 98 he received in the Fountain of Youth.

In the gallop-out, Forte and Mage were best, but neither of them galloped past the mid-point of the first turn.

Another note about Forte -- he was sweating on his neck during the post parade.

*Craig Milkowski (@TimeformUSfigs) and DRF handicapper David Aragona (@HorseToWatch, TimeformUS PPs, Morning Lines for NYRA tracks) kicked off Sunday morning on Twitter saying the time for the Florida Derby is wrong. They are respected figures, and was taking it seriously, noting the disparity in the rate of speed in Forte's fourth quarter-mile (originally calculated at 25.37) and his final eighth-mile (originally calculated at 11.62).

Later on Sunday, Milkowski tweeted, "Collaborated a bit with @randy_moss_TV on this and we were within 0.03 seconds timing from video. 1:49.40 is where we finished up, or 0.89 seconds slower than the current official time." Late Sunday afternoon, Equibase revised its chart. The revised chart can be viewed
here.

Forte

Even with the Equibase chart revised, Forte ran near-perfect 12s and finished in under 38 seconds. The chart call: "Forte had his head turned at the start but was still away well, settled off the pace three wide, was patiently ridden three wide between foes around the far turn, swung five wide turning for home, surged outside and was up late."

Mage also ran near-perfect 12s and finished in under 38 seconds. The chart call: "Mage broke slowly and lost his path, trailed early, raced three wide around the first turn, advanced outside down the backstretch, circled five wide around the far turn, took the lead in upper stretch, vied outside of Cyclone Mischief through midstretch, put away that foe nearing the sixteenth pole but but was unable to resist the winner in the later yards."

Mage was making only his third start. He has room for upside after a gallant effort in this race, but he is inexperienced for something like the Kentucky Derby. Note that he broke slowly and lost his path and thus trailed the entire field early in the Florida Derby. Of course there will be even more traffic in the Kentucky Derby.

Cyclone MIschief may be in Dale Romans' barn at Churchill Downs by the time this is posted. If not, he'll be there soon. He is a horse that should be watched carefully in the coming weeks. I'm not sold on him but at least he's improved from the egg he laid in the Holy Bull, managing to stay in striking distance during his last two races.

He ran 12s but didn't finish in 38 seconds or less. The chart call: "Mr. Ripple tracked the pace four wide, was bumped midway around the first turn, edged closer three wide between foes rounding the far turn then flattened out in the stretch."

With 20 Derby points, Mr. Ripple is unlikely to make the Derby field, but never say never.

April 1, 1 1/8 Mile Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn Park, track fast

In my opinion, this was a visually impressive race. Angel of Empire reminded me of Captain Bodgit's Derby campaign as he launched an unrelenting bid from sixth place to circle four wide and draw off and win by 4 1/4 lengths. The depth of the field might be a bit suspect, but there were four horses considered serious contenders when the gate was loaded with odds ranging from 5-2 to 9-2.

Only one length separated the next four finishers: King Russell, Reincarnate, Rocket Can, Airtime and Red Route One.

We've seen a demise of dosage's importance in the Kentucky Derby, but Angel of Empire could signal its total irrelevance. His dosage index is 9.00 [profile is 4-4-2-0-0 (10)]. In the past, the nine-furlong major preps culled horses with very high dosage indices. I have never seen a horse with a dosage index this high so successful in a major Derby prep.

Red Route One was really disappointing. With blinkers added and an agressive jockey (Gaffalione) on board, he was last, 13 3/4 lengths off the pace, after the first half-mile. He finished sixth, beaten 5 1/2 lengths, and actually lost a half-length to the winner in the final furlong despite how slowly he ran early. The chart call for Red Route One (sixth). "Off a step slow, raced well back, four wide into the lane when moving a bit closer, went flat in the final furlong to finish up evenly.

Angel of Empire was given a 94 Beyer Speed Rating in the Arkansas Derby, up from the 87 he received in the Risen Star Stakes.

Angel of Empire led the way in the gallop-out, separated two or three lengths from Red Route One who was just ahead of King Russell, Reincarnate and Rocket Can, and the latter four remained grouped closely like they were at the finish line.

Angel of Empire

He ran 12s and finished in 38 seconds or less. Far less. The chart call: "Angel of Empire unhurried for five furlongs off the inside, four wide into the far turn, began a good move on the outside soon after, gained command into the stretch, quickly clear, drifted in, clearly best."

I am biased because I have a 112-1 ticket on Angel of Empire from Pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager offered by Churchill Downs, and I have an Angel of Empire-All Others exacta box ticket from the same pool.

I was sitting in Russell County, Kentucky at the time. King Russell looked so good in the post parade I put a few dollars on him to win despite his 58-1 odds. Shoulda woulda coulda bet him to place. He was prancing with his neck arched and looked for all the world like a Kentucky Derby horse in his prime. As well as King Russell ran, though, he lost a length of ground to the winner in the final eighth mile while passing Reincarnate, Two Eagles River, Airtime and Rocket Can to get the place.

I wouldn't write off this horse just yet. Trainer Mott said he thinks there's something more there that the horse just isn't giving. I keep thinking of Country House, also trained by Mott. I think it would be wise to watch Rocket Can's Derby works closely. Country House put in the best workout of his life a week before the Kentucky Derby.

March 26, 1 1/8 Mile Sunland Derby, Sunland Park, track fast

Due to a timer malfunction, an official time is not available for the first quarter-mile, which was originally shown as 20.58. The winner, Wild on Ice, lost his previous two races by over 40 lengths combined. Last year's Sunland Derby was not impressive either, and I'm starting to wonder if its Grade 3 status will be in jeopardy. Wild on Ice was not early-nominated to the Triple Crown. Late nominations are due on the date of this post, March 27. When asked after the race, trainer Joel Marr laughed, "We weren't thinking about any of that (Kentucky Derby) until a few minutes ago."

Wild on Ice

He did not run 12s or finish in under 38 seconds. The chart call: Wild on Ice tracked the early pace, advanced six wide through the second turn, took the lead in early stretch, drifted in, met the bid of Expectations, kept that rival in tight, dueled to late stretch and edged clear late.

He did not run 12s or finish in 38 seconds or less. Unlike the winner, Low Expectations was early-nominated to the Triple Crown. The chart call: Low Expectations was allowed to settle early, was eased back into the backstretch, saved ground into the home turn, made a bid on the winner from the inside in mid stretch, dueled to late stretch and finished second best.

The chart call: Henry Q set a pressured early pace, went four wide into the second turn, met the bid of Wild on Ice from the outside and Low Expectations from the inside, eased out form between those two rivals, drifted out and weakened late.

How Did He Do That

He was not early-nominated to the Triple Crown and does not appear possible for the Derby. The chart call: How Did He Do That was void of any early speed, raced three wide into the second turn and offered no late rally.

March 25, 1 1/8 Mile Jeff Ruby Steaks, Turfway Park, track fast

Per trainer Rivelli Two Phil's prefers synthetic surface to dirt and runs best on dirt if it's an off track. After training well at Turfway, he certainly displayed a liking for the synthetic surface on race day, winning going away by 5 1/4 lengths. The next finisher, Major Dude, was 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Funtastic Again at the wire, and Wadsworth was another three lengths back in fourth.

This Ruby purse was upped to $700,000 from $600,000 last year and $250,000 the year before, so maybe it's attracting better horses as indicated by the numbers below. However, trainer Rivelli said a few days ago, "I've been trying to think of the easiest spot for the money and I think this will be the spot."

Two Phil's gallop-out extended all the way to the backstretch. The camera work doesn't show anything else close to him.

Two Phil's earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Two Phil's

Two Phil's ran a perfect race getting 12s (averaging within one second of 12 seconds per furlong) at all the calls -- only 4/100 of a second off at the finish, he gets credit for hitting that mark. He finished in 36.72 seconds, which is outstanding. But can he do that on dirt? The chart call: "Two Phil's confidently handled while an outside trip, stayed clear of any trouble, rallied along from quarter pole to go clear with authority."

Major Dude

He ran 12s at four of the five calls (three are required to get credit), and he finished in under 38 seconds. The issue is that Major Dude is a turf horse. Sometimes, but not always by any means, turf horses run well on the dirt at Churchill Downs, where Major Dude has never raced. At the moment he's 12th on the points leaderboard. Major Dude had to break from post 1 in the Ruby, but Irad said he got a great trip and was just outkicked going home. The chart call: "Major Dude close up throughout, secured position to far turn while chasing winner home proving no match."

He rans 12s at four of the calls (gets credit for 1:37.03 after a mile) but didn't finish in under 38 seconds. Something had to take the lead, and it was Funtastic Again who did the heavy lifting for the first six furlongs in honest-to-quick fractions for the distance. In his sole start on dirt, Funtastic Again finished ninth in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. March 25, 1 3/16 Mile LOUISIANA DERBY, Fair Grounds, track fast

This was the fourth running of the Louisiana Derby at the distance of 1 3/16 mile. In 2020 favored Wells Bayou won in 1:56.47 and earned an Equibase speed figure of 102. Hot Rod Charlie was best in 2021, timed in 1:55.06 (101 Equibase figure). In 2022 it was Epicenter in 1:54.38 (new track record) (102 Equibase). Kingsbarns was timed in 1:57.33.

The Louisiana Derby has not been known for producing Kentucky Derby winners and has yet to do so at the new, longer distance, but they've been knocking on the door. Hot Rod Charlie and O Besos were third and fifth in the class of '21 and of course Epicenter ran a gallant second in '22.

My initial impresssion of Saturday's race was not all that good, but today I see Kingsbarns earned a 100 Equibase, consistent with recent winners of the Louisiana Derby. The problem I have is Kingsbarns got everything his own way after trainer Pletcher wisely determined there was absolutely no pace in the race and instructed Flavient Prat to take the lead if it came to him. From there, Prat walked the dog home. The Kentucky Derby is unlikely to set up this way for Kingsbarns.

On the other hand, the son of Uncle Mo has talent, he appears to be a versatile runner, and he carries his track with him. There aren't many horses who could carry this off in just the third career start, and I'm certain he could have run faster if asked, but it wasn't needed. Preceding this race he won a mile and 40 yard allowance at Tampa by almost eight lengths in a nifty time of 1:40.78 after coming from 4 1/2 lengths off the pace. The Louisiana Derby was Kingsbarns' third win at as many tracks.

An odd thing about this race is how closely-packed it was at the finish. Jace's Road (third) hit the wire 6 1/4 lengths behind Kingsbarns, and the trailing nine horses were all within 6 1/2 lengths of Jace's Road.

Kingsbarns galloped out well, followed a few lengths by Disarm. A latecomer to those two in the middle of the first turn was Baseline Beater, who finished ninth, beaten 11 3/4 lengths.

Kingsbarns earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure

Kingsbarns

He does not get credit for 12s, but he finished in a time consistent with bettering the last three furlongs in 38 seconds or less. Kingsbarns actually sped up in the latter stages of the race, running the fourth quarter-mile faster than the preceding ones and the final 3/16 in a solid 18.20. He ran the final 7/16 mile in 42.62, meaning Kingsbarns had plenty of gas in the tank in the long Fair Grounds stretch. The chart call: "Kingsbarns set a comfortable and lightly pressured pace along the inside, remained in hand as an outer foe vied around the far turn, responded readily once set down entering the lane, quickly drew off in upper stretch, and ran well through the wire."

Disarm

Disarm did not run 12s but he finished well and a little faster than Kingsbarns. He gets credit for finishing in less than 38 seconds. Like Kingsbarns, his fourth quarter-mile was faster than the preceding ones. He is the only horse in the top four that closed and wasn't in somewhat of a merry-go-round. The chart call: "Disarm tracked from midpack along the inside, saved ground while awaiting racing room around the far turn, sustained a rail rally to gain place at the furlong grounds, and proved second best."

Jace's Road

He did not run 12s but we give him credit for finishing in under 38. Jace's Road popped the gate before the start and considering the stress that must have caused, he performed well once the running started, but not as well as the winner. The chart call: "Jace's Road popped open the gate pre-race without leaving it, was backed out and reloaded after a veterinarian exam, pressed the eventual winner from the outside, vied around the far turn, but proved no match for that one entering the lane, gave way, and lost placed to an inner rival at the eighth pole."

Like the others, he did not run 12s. He gets credit for finishing in under 38 seconds. Neither trainer Asmussen or jockey Santana had any public comment after the race. The chart call: "Shopper's Revenge stalked along the inside, then from the pocket around the far turn, but vacated the rail entering the lane to vie for minor places, got outkicked for show by an inner bidder in upper stretch, chased thereafter, and held fourth."

March 25, 1900 Meter UAE DERBY, Meydan, track fast

April 25 NOTE: Further review of the race hitting pause with a "meters left" clock showing, I have Derma Sotogake getting credit for running 12's at the first three calls and finishing in under 38 seconds. I don't have Continuar, who was a distant third, getting credit for either factor.

_______________

For a few years Emirates Racing produced charts showing fractional times for all the runners on World Cup day, but those days are gone. There is no equivalent to Equibase in Dubai, and i cannot locate the fractions anywhere. Give me a holler if you know where to get them.

Derma Sotogake's race was impressive, but he got a setup much like Kingsbarns in the Louisiana Derby. One difference is that he ran faster. The distance of 1900 meters is slightly shorter than 1 3/16 mile, but the final time was a sharp 1:55.81.

The race played out much the same as Mendelssohn's win of the UAE Derby a few years ago, producing a track record 1:55.18 that still stands. We all know what happened next. A lot of very good handicappers picked Mendelssohn to win the 2018 Kentucky Derby (I know, I can't believe it's already been five years either) only to see him finish last of 20 on a rain-soaked track when Justify set fractions of 22.24, 45.77, 1:11.01 and 1:37.35 en route to a winning 2:04.20 and the Triple Crown.

A local announcer in Dubai said Derma Sotogake got the final quarter-mile in 24.30 seconds, which we don't see too often. The son of Mind Your Biscuits has raced exclusively on dirt and improved appreciably from his third-place finish in the one-mile, one-turn Saudi Derby when he was third of 13, beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Commissioner King.

His forward running style is one that has worked in recent Kentucky Derbys, but the on-track experts expressed doubt he could win the Roses the way he ran the UAE Derby, I suspect because his opening fractions were not all that fast, which in all probability would put him behind horses, not in a front-running cruise.

Feb. 11, 1 1/8 Mile WITHERS STAKES, Aqueduct, track fast

Hit Show was all by himself at the finish line, winning by over five lengths. The others did not look like Kentucky Derby material. The chart call: "HIT SHOW broke in and bumped with a foe, settled while inside to the two path, was roused on the far turn, rallied to take the lead at the three-sixteenths, shook clear under a drive into the final furlong, drifted in outside the sixteenth-pole then was placed under a hand-ride with his ears pricked while much the best."

The winner received a 91 Beyer despite his very slow time on a track rated fast.

Angel of Empire

I have a futures ticket on him, and I'm rooting for him, but he did not run 12s or finish in less than 38 seconds, but he won. The chart call: "ANGEL OF EMPIRE settled off of the pace in the two path, gained in the four to five paths and between horses around the far turn, sustained a charge after changing leads between horses at the three sixteenths pole, bid at the furlong grounds along with an inner SUN THUNDER, battled with that foe in the final sixteenth, and edged ahead."
